Technical correction to the original illustration
Example-identity correction: the image label “Genapol 600” has not been matched to the exact manufacturer documentation. Do not use it for identification, purchasing, formulation or INCI assignment; do not equate it with Coco-Glucoside or another Genapol grade. As a documentation example only, the official Genapol PMS page specifies INCI Glycol Distearate; that information does not apply to the unverified label. The historical image is retained with this explicit exclusion. The article’s principle remains: match the trade name, manufacturer, grade code and identity documents, rather than similar names.

A raw material may have a supplier’s or manufacturer’s trade name, while its identity is expressed using another nomenclature where available and relevant.
Trade name
A trade name identifies a particular commercial product or grade. It may convey context specific to the manufacturer, specification, physical form or product documentation.
INCI
INCI is a standard nomenclature used to identify cosmetic ingredients where that nomenclature applies. Not every CMID chemical should be assumed to have an INCI name.
Why must they not be treated as equivalent automatically?
Two trade names do not automatically identify the same product. Compare materials using their identity, manufacturer or supplier, stated grade, specifications and relevant technical documentation.
When comparing materials, check ingredient identity and technical documentation, rather than the trade name alone. This article does not establish product equivalence.

Text in illustration 1
Trade name versus INCI: why can ingredient names differ? One ingredient can have many names. It is important to understand the differences.
Trade name: a name given by the supplier or manufacturer. It can differ by brand or company. Example: Genapol® 600. INCI name: an international standard name (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients). Used in official cosmetic-product labelling. Example: Coco-Glucoside.
Remember: always match the trade name to the INCI to ensure the correct ingredient is used.
